WHAT YOU MISSED

NJ IFMA recently visited Philips Lighting and enjoyed their famous lighting lab and lighting demonstrations. Attendees are all set on returning to learn even more about how humans interact with light.   The entire seating area rotates to reveal different lighting scenarios comparing different fixtures and results.

NJ IFMA FM's brought good luck to the New York Mets this season enjoying a presentation of the history of Baseball Stadium Design, a game, and plenty of ballpark food! Those following the news will understand why this was a once in a lifetime event at CitiField!

NJ IFMA members traded business cards and experiences at the summer social.  The Stage House Tavern kept us in ribs and drinks until dark and then still many continued to talk and laugh all the way to the parking lot.

NJ IFMA held a Board Retreat at the Beach Tavern Restaurant in Monmouth Beach with a record 24 attending. The planning and bonding at this meeting will serve the membership with new programs and enthusiasm for many months to come.

  • PASSIONATE LEADERSHIP

Dennis J. Kowal AIA (pictured at far right) is sworn in as the new NJ IFMA President at the Reeves-Reed Aboretum in Summit. Your new Executive Board includes the very capable Frank Wardzinski Treasurer, Joseph Berdetta 2VP, Adam Nasr 1VP, and Stephen Wehner Secretary (left to right). In 2016, Alex Hernandez joins the E-Board as Secretary.

Alice Acevedo, Program Chairwoman (pictured at left), prepares the hall for the New- Board Reception and tour of the Arboretum.

Your new Executive Board immediately appointed Committees and conducted a Board Retreat to set vision and goals to shape the future of NJ IFMA.
    EXCITING PROGRAMS AND TOURS

A new emphasis on exciting tours and speakers that address current FM issues was launched.

A spectacular tour of the Mets Citi-field followed by this educational lighting lab visit at Philips lighting resulted in a two hour discovery of the differences in LED lighting.

Programs center around the eleven core competencies that must be maintained for the CFM credential.  Here, members bring their hard hats for a tour of the old Budweiser Brewery in Newark and practice the twelfth core competency: knowing the difference between beers! (just kidding).

Caroline Shelly (pictured in foreground) coordinates sponsors for our events and is a long time volunteer at NJIFMA.  To sponsor an event contact her at  cshelly@hfplanners.com.  Most of the tours this year (Philips Lighting, Citi-Field, Budweiser) were sold out.  In the future, first preference  for limited seating tours will be given to NJ IFMA FM’s and volunteers (another reason to get involved).

    CONNECTING WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
Relationships with other organizations are strengthened including this Article by NJ IFMA President Dennis Kowal which appeared in the Mid Atlantic Real Estate Journal.

An Historic alliance between the NJ USGBC and NJ IFMA was created this year. USGBC NJ Board President, Faith Taylor (Wyndham Resorts Inc.) and NJ IFMA President Kowal (Dennis Kowal Architects) is pictured here celebrating the alliance. Both organizations agreed to accept each other’s members at educational and other events; at member prices.

Kowal was invited to serve as a design juror for the 2015 USGBC Emerald Building Awards. The awards acknowledge best practices in green and LEED building design.

    CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER

Good weather prevails at our annual Golf Outing which provided outstanding networking opportunities for our solution providers, sponsors and FM’s. Another Board Goal is to connect FM’s with resources and people who can make their job easier. Jerry Loehr ran a smooth event and created many new friendships by co-sponsoring this event with ISPE  International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering .

Some of your leadership attended Fusion in Orlando and World Workplace in Denver to Exchange best practices both as FM’s and as Chapter leaders.  Joe Berdetta, Jackie Lewis, Joe Morgan, Dennis Kowal, James Sheets, Maria Cristallo, Marianne Zeller, Sharifa Nelson  and others hosted a NJIFMA get together in Denver.

    CAREER ADVANCEMENT

NJIFMA goes to college!  Past President, Joel  Orton (standing at right), teaches the FMP credential at Brookdale Community College while Mark Adam and John Hemrick (not pictured) run an FMP study group for NJIFMA members.  Advancing our professionals is a high priority.

President Kowal  was invited to become an Adjunct Professor at Brookdale Community College after completing the “Train the Trainer Course” with IFMA national.  Kowal will be teaching the SFP credential at Brookdale in the fall of 2016.

Volunteers from NJ  IFMA represent the organization at multiple events including The Mid Atlantic Buildings and Facility Mangers Show, The Mid Atlantic Real Estate and Health Care Conference (pictured above),  the New Jersey Real Estate Summit, and  the Industrial  Real Estate and Development Summit.

We are thankful to Diana Barsoum (pictured at left), Chris Hendricks (pictured center), Caroline Shelly, Alice Acevedo, Paul Maloney, and Dennis Kowal for representing NJ IFMA at The Mid Atlantic Buildings and Facility Mangers show in Somerset;  and for helping to solidify the membership.  Randy Hertel FM for Central Jersey Blood Services (pictured at right) joins NJ IFMA as a result of this effort

    INVOLVEMENT AND FRIENDSHIPS

The summer social is always a packed event with no purpose other than enjoying friends and meeting new members. The Stage House Tavern in Franklin supplies the food, drink and outdoor plaza and members supply the energy

And sometimes we just get together informally to have fun.  More fun is also a goal of the new leadership. Education Chairman Joe Morgan invited all he knew to attend a Christmas Concert in December.    He plays clarinet in a 70 piece band that has secured a place on the Carnegie Hall stage in 2017!  A side effect of volunteering for NJIFMA are the strong relationships that are built which can evolve into some fun times!

Do you recognize Kathleen Bicksler (left) who serves on the Communications Committee? She was brave enough to get on stage and sing her heart out at World Workplace in Denver. When not on stage, she’s the FM at Movado.

If you want to attend our events but can’t get away from the office, Tina Saunders of our Communication Committee often posts pictures in real time of our events. Knowing this, President Kowal’s wife often watches the activities unfold from the comfort of home and office. Join the NJ IFMA group on Linked in, twitter and Facebook.   This year the Board implemented new branding, google docs for sharing among Board members, adding social media, creating a short video and expanding the Board to twenty-four active members.

Have booth will travel. There is room for you here! If you want to volunteer for some role or position, just contact our Executive Administrator, Joanne Gerow at admin@njifma.com.

Farewell Tina! We are sorry to see Communications Committee member, Tina Saunders, leave the State. Tina received this “thank you” from the Board for a job well done! We are thankful for the passion of volunteers, like Tina, at NJ IFMA.

Bo Mitchell is a National Expert. You do not want to face this expert in court! FM’s were instructed at the March Meeting, “17 Mistakes of Emergency Planning,” on how to be Leaders in their own organization. FMs gained insight about the legal aspects of disaster planning. CEO’s who fail to take emergency planning seriously face jail time. FM’s play  instrumental roles in safeguarding.

We study hard and we play hard at the IFMA New Jersey Chapter! Join the Leadership if you are up to it! Our annual Board Retreat is on 8 July 2016. To become a leader, contact Joanne Gerow at admin@njifma.com
    EXCITING PROGRAMS AND TOURS

In February, NJ IFMA members went underground! Through a special invitation by Mrs. Berdetta, the wife of 2nd Vice President, Joseph Berdetta (FM Kent Place School), our FM’s were lead on a tour of the AT&T GLOBAL NETWORK OPERATIONS CENTER. The AT&T GNOC is the largest, and most sophisticated command-and-control center of its kind in the world.

Steve Moser (pictured at podium) explained how this monitor center averts disaster on an hourly basis by foiling hackers, shunting around system overloads, and avoiding communication shut-downs due to natural and terroristic disasters.

Programs are designed to meet the continuing education needs according to the eleven core competencies. At this event we learned about resiliency of systems through redundancy, pro-active measuring and projecting, and worst-case-scenario planning.
